The most well-known and widely found species of black bass is the largemouth bass. Its name comes from its big mouth, and it may get quite huge—some individuals can reach more than 20 pounds (9 kilogrammes). The colouring of largemouth bass is dark green, and they have a lateral line along their sides. They originated in North America and have since been spread to many other parts of the world.

As the name suggests, a smallmouth bass' mouth is smaller than a largemouth bass' mouth. Its colouring is more bronze or brown, and it is renowned for its fierce fighting skills. Native to North America, smallmouth bass are most prevalent in the eastern and central portions of the continent, though they have been introduced to other areas as well.

The name "spotted bass" comes from the distinctive spots that run along the bottom flanks of this relative of the largemouth bass. They can be found in rivers and reservoirs and are native to the Southeast of the United States. Despite being smaller than largemouth bass, spotted fish are highly prized by anglers.

Black bass are well recognised for being predatory fish that eat other aquatic life as well as smaller fish and insects. They are mainly caught utilising a variety of fishing methods, such as fly fishing, casting lures, and using live bait. Fishing for black bass is a well-liked leisure activity that is popular with anglers all around the world.
